Turnpike bust: $1 million in heroin seized

CNHI News Service

NEW BALTIMORE, Pa. — State police seized an estimated $1 million worth of heroin late Wednesday after stopping a vehicle headed toward Pittsburgh through Allegheny Township.

It is one of the largest drug busts on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in recent memory, state police said.

“That’s a huge amount of drugs,” Trooper Michael J. Volk said.

In a court document, Cpl. Vincent Mock said that he attempted to stop a 2009 Dodge Charger that was entering the Allegheny Tunnel without headlights around 6 p.m., but the driver refused to pull over.

Troopers pursued the vehicle, which was traveling 78 mph in a 65 mph zone, until it stopped at milepost 115.

The driver, Deshawn N. Ulmer, 45, of Pittsburgh, told troopers his mother was in the hospital and that he was driving under suspension.

Trooper Westley Berkebile and “Bosko,” a drug-sniffing German shepherd, were summoned after the driver gave his consent to search the vehicle, troopers said.

A large cardboard box was found in the trunk stuffed with 25,000 stamp bags of heroin, police said.

Ulmer faces a series of drug charges.
