Rockwall County artists Joe and Marona Hewitt have presented Fate Mayor Bill Broderick a painting of a 1967 scene of Fate when the population was 191.
The presentation was made at the Dec. 21 Fate City Council meeting.
The painting is from 1967 Dallas Times-Herald Sunday magazine cover and shows an old house, a lane, and a sign, “Fate, Pop 191.”
Marona Hewitt saw a black and white photo of the cover at City Hall, photocopied it, and took it to the Hewitt studio where she and her husband painted it much larger and in full color. Joe Hewitt then framed it in weathered barn wood.
Hewitt has been painting for 40 years and teaches art in her Rockwall County studio and at retirement centers in Dallas and Garland. Her husband started painting in 2004. In 2006, his painting of a leopard in a thorn tree won a ribbon at the State Fair of Texas.
The Hewitts’ paintings are on display at Sauza Tex Mex Restaurant in Fate. Both paint mostly landscapes. The husband also does character studies, including a series of historic Native Americans as well as animals.
