ROCKWALL —
The inaugural running of The Patriot Half Marathon in Rockwall has been termed a success, and the man behind the Patriot dream already is looking forward to the 2013 Memorial Day event.
Barrett Hopper said an eight-year-old dream became reality Monday with the half marathon, 5k race and one mile fun run.
Hopper, owner of Rockwall Running Center and coach of the Rockwall Running Club, said the running events attracted 1,420 registrations, including about 900 runners who signed up for the challenging half marathon event.
Proceeds from the event will benefit about a dozen charities. One recipient is the family of Nate Oxford, a 6-year-old Fate youngster battling cancer. The 5k race was named in his honor, the Race for Nate.
“We are already making plans for 2013,” Hopper said in an email to runners who pre-registered for this year’s event. “We have gotten quite a bit of feedback on things that went well, things we can do better and things you would like to see. We appreciate the advice and comments. We will be incorporating many of them in 2013, along with some surprises that will amaze you.”
In the 5k race, Andrew Dealy of Denton was the first-place finisher. His time was 19:34. The top female finisher was 13-year-old Bailey Miley of Heath. Her winning time was 24:37.

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
The animal shelter employee dragged the puppy across the floor, moving him from one puppy-filled cage to another. Unfortunately, overcrowding in animal shelters is more the norm than the exception in all too many places.

RISD Aquatic Center a venue unlike any other
The view from the parking lot of the Rockwall ISD Aquatic Center is impressive enough, but the 56,000- square-foot facility is capable of taking one’s breath away once inside.

Fulton hoopster eyes bigger goals after stellar season
When it comes to high school basketball, it’s not uncommon to see one player take over a game on a regular basis. What you might not often see is a single player outscoring the opposing team.
However, in the case of Fulton Academy senior Conner Cleveland, such a feat is nothing to bat an eye at. After all, Cleveland did it a few times during the 2012-13 season. -
'Red' event to benefit Helping Hands health center
Red dresses, red wines and cheeses to match will be plentiful Saturday night at Culpepper steakhouse in Rockwall. But while this may be a social gathering, the guests in attendance will arrive with a mission in mind – supporting a very important cause.
Helping Hands has partnered with Select Wines to put on the annual “Rockwall Goes Red” fundraiser, which generates funds for the Helping Hands health center to provide heart screenings for the women of Rockwall County. -
Coffee house, big-name bands form bond
The Life House might seem like your typical neighborhood coffee shop, but the quaint, unassuming establishment in downtown Rockwall has recently caught the eye of more than just the average, java-drinking Joe.

HEART OF THE MATTER
When a rare disease took her little sister after just two years together, Ella Turner did what most people do after losing a loved one – she grieved. It was what she did next – or rather, what she is still doing – that’s extraordinary, jumping rope to raise money for heart disease, which claimed the life of her 2-year-old sister.

Two fundraisers scheduled for injured firefighter
Two fundraisers are scheduled for this spring for Devon Colbert, a Rockwall volunteer Fireman and Garland Fireman who graduated from Rockwall High School in 2002.
Devon was involved in a serious car accident on Dec. 17 of last year; as a result, Devon suffered a severe spinal injury that has left him currently paralyzed. Devon was moved to the Baylor Rehabilitation Center after multiple weeks in ICU. -

Demand for dogs grows as economy slows
Patriot PAWS, the non-profit Rockwall organization that trains service dogs for disabled armed service veterans at no cost to the veterans, recently celebrated training and delivering their 50th service dog. Pretty impressive for an organization that began six years ago with four volunteers.
The inmate trainer program they began has given 117 inmates a chance to learn a new profession, and 18-20 of the graduates now have jobs in animal-related fields. - More Features Headlines
