ROCKWALL —
The Women in Need of Rockwall County will be holding a candlelight vigil at the Harbor this Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. in honor of victims who have lost their lives to domestic violence. The free event is part of the organizations efforts to raise awareness of domestic violence in Rockwall County, particularly during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“We use this event to kickoff the month,” Cheryl Weaver, community education coordinator for Women in Need, said. “We usually have a couple of survivors who will share their testimony, some music and a candlelight vigil with electric candles.”
The vigil will take place at the small fountain at the Harbor between En Fuego and the valet parking. According to Weaver, the event usually draws city and county officials.
“We’re trying to come at it from two angles,” Weaver said. “We want to be there for the woman that need it, but want to get into the schools, so that the students know the warning signs and are on the lookout for them.”
Women In Need has been serving victims of domestic violence by offering emergency shelter, legal advocacy, counseling, support groups and referrals for over 20 years. Their shelter is located in Greenville. Six years ago, the shelter saw domestic violence incidents double in frequency in Rockwall County, so established a plan to not only increase awareness of the problem, but also educate the community and youth about the warning signs of potentially abusive relationships. In 2004, WIN started with a legal advocate in Rockwall County. Today, they have a full-time legal advocate, a part-time administrative assistant, and a full-time community education coordinator.
WIN sees between 70 and 100 clients a month and reaches more than 2,000 students each year through their Teen Dating Violence Curriculum. Their services are free and they rely heavily on grants and community support to operate.
