RC superintendent warns of tough state finances

Rockwall County — RCISD Superintendant Randy Hancock came back home after the last Commissioner’s Cabinet meeting with dire predictions for the state of educational funding statewide.

“We’ve been told that the deficit may be as high as $12-15 billion,” Hancock said. “From the commissioner’s mouth, we’re now hearing that it could be as high as $28 billion.

“If it is a $25-28 billion deficit, we’re in trouble. We’re in big trouble.”

Among other possible measures to deal with the economy, Hancock said that state superintendents are looking for relief from the state for many of the unfunded mandates that the districts are saddled with.

Royse City’s recent Tax Ratification Election may provide some relief for the district in the near future.

“Fortunately for us we passed the TRE,” Hancock said. “So it’s going to be a lot easier for us than some districts.”

Hancock said there was nothing for sure until the commissioners cabinet met again in January, at which time they will have hard numbers to look at.

If the deficit is as bad as some analysts are saying it could be, Texas school districts will be facing potential cuts and layoffs that could be devastating. Some school districts could be hard pressed to keep from having to close their doors.

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there’s really no other way to say it,” Hancock concluded.
