March election will only have Republican candidates
By Jim Hardin

The March 2 primary election will feature only Republican candidates in contested races for county judge, commissioner, county clerk and justice of the peace positions.
Fate Mayor Bill Broderick, who also is the Rockwall County Republican chairman, was pleased that only Republicans filed for county offices.
He presided over a Fate City Council meeting shortly after the filing deadline Monday. When the order of business progressed to the mayor’s report on the city council agenda, Broderick talked about the candidate filings.
“We’ve got quite a race,” Broderick told the city council audience. “The Democratic Party didn’t put up anyone as of 10 minutes until 6 … so every elected position on the county level is currently held by Republicans and there are a lot of Republicans running against Republicans this year.”
He then went through a summary of the filings, including the number of candidates who had filed for each position.
Only three races are uncontested. District Attorney Kenda Culpepper and District Clerk Kay McDaniel have no opponents in their re-election bids. David Peek is the only candidate to file for county treasurer. Bill Sinclair announced last month that he would not seek a second term as county treasurer.
County Judge Chris Florance has three challengers. Joining him as candidates are Jerry Hogan, Kenneth R. Jones and Kevin Fowler.
Incumbent county commissioners Lorie Grinnan and David Magness drew challengers less than a week before the filing deadline.
Fred Lively filed as a candidate for the Precinct 2 county commissioner position now held by Grinnan. Stanley McWhirter filed for Precinct 4 county commissioner, a position now occupied by Magness.
David Sweet and Shelli Miller have filed for the county clerk position that was vacated when Lisa Constant was appointed county auditor in October.
Both justice of the peace races have three candidates each.
For Precinct 1 and 2 justice of the peace, incumbent David Karr is a candidate, along with Jack D. James and Michelle L. Sutton. Incumbent Richard L. Holloway is a candidate for the Precinct 2 and 3 justice of the peace position, along with Nancy Beaty and Cathy A. Penn.
Paul C. Wilson and Brenda T. Zielke are candidates for the Rockwall County Republican chair position. And Ralph Mount and Andrew Hall are candidates for Precinct 2B chair.
