ROCKWALL —
The world of habitation is changing. It used to be people moved into an apartment in their 20s and would go out into the world for entertainment. This trend has changed and complexes like The Rockwall Commons are offering residents entertainment with their leases, allowing them to spend less money on a night on the town.
One such amenity is a large chess set that Commons manager Tiffany Langdon said has become fairly popular in all age groups.
“It was my supervisor’s idea to put it in,” she said. “They specialize in hotels and they have a lot of these at hotel properties.”
The board is approximately 10 feet by 10 feet and each piece hovers around two feet tall. Theft is a bit of problem according to Langdon and at the moment the board is absent several black and white pieces.
“We have thought about putting cement in the pieces to make them more difficult to take,” she said. “Regardless of what we do the pieces are our property and we will prosecute someone if they’re caught with one of the pieces.”
The board sits in front of a large amphitheater that is sometimes used for concerts. Langdon said in addition to The Commons’ putting green, basketball court and movie theatre the amphitheater is a pretty popular area for people to congregate.
“All of this really creates a sense of community,” she said. “It draws people in and makes them feel like they don’t have to go far from home to have a resort-style experience.
The Commons offers one to three bedroom apartments with prices ranging from the high $800s to mid $1,500s. Deals change throughout the year.
The Rockwall Mansions also offer some amenities that are not commonly found at apartment complexes.
Manager Dezerae Coursey said a full spa is available for both residents and non-residents. The spa is actually the second location of another business in Rockwall that just happens to be located at the Mansions according to Coursey.
A 3,500-foot fitness center is also available equipped with cardio machines that have televisions attached to them.
Rates are subject to change though, but typically stay within $915 to $2,100 with one to four bedroom town homes available.
Not every apartment complex is springing for spas and chess sets though. Manager of Pebblebrook apartments Brittney Abney said two laundry facilities, two pools, a basketball court and a tennis court are among her more popular amenities, all of which are in great shape according to Abney. Prices are a little cheaper at Pebblebrook ranging from $645 to $1,028, but there are not a plethora of available apartments at Pebblebrook with their current occupancy sitting at 94 percent. Although they are close to capacity Abney said there are no current plans to expand, because there is not a lot of room to expand into.
