Two Halloween events to focus on family fun

ROCKWALL — Scare is in the air on Oct. 27 as both Rockwall Main Street and the Rockwall Parks and Recreation Department have family-friendly Halloween events planned. Beginning at 4 p.m., Scare on the Square is back with a costume contest, face painting, a balloon artist and other activities aimed at entertaining both parents and their children.

“It’s a very wholesome family atmosphere,” Bethany Golden, Rockwall Main Street director, said. “People really enjoy bringing their kids out to this event.”

Scare on the Square will run until 6 p.m. The event began as a way for The Rockwall Old Town Shoppes and Friends of Downtown to bring individuals into downtown Rockwall and show appreciation for their customers.

“While the organizations obviously want people to return downtown and shop with them, it’s also a way of giving back to their customer base,” Golden said.

Other entertainment will include a spinning wheel and a fortune teller. The costume contest will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the northside of the square.

“You don’t have to pre-register for the contest, although there are different age categories,” Golden said. “This year, the prizes are sponsoredby Popcorn Papa. People really put a lot of work into their costumes, so it’s a lot of fun.”

Parking is available in several locations downtown, including a public lot on the corner of 205 and Kaufman.

“It’s a free event, and there is a ton of stuff going on that day,” Golden said. “Hopefully, people will just make a day of it.”

Halloween Extravaganza

The Harbor will be filled with candy and costumes Saturday night from 6 to 9:30 p.m. as various vendors and businesses will set up booths, set up games and pass out candy.

“The costume contest will take place on site, definitely geared toward kids,” Recreation Coordinator Andrew Ainsworth said. “The age range is from as small as you would want to dress them up to as old as they’ll still dress up. The contest will take place before 7:30 p.m.”

The event will include free bounce houses, giveaways and entertainment for local cheerleaders.

“Families can bring flashlights, and glowsticks are always fun,” Ainsworth said. “It’s always a good idea to get to the Harbor a little bit early for parking. It’s a nice opportunity to go outside and enjoy the Harbor in a safe environment.”
