ROCKWALL —
Three Rockwall residents traveled to North Carolina earlier this month to attend the annual Democratic National Convention. Dr. Barbara Montgomery, Rockwall County Democratic Party Chairman Terri St. Clair and attorney Michael Bonesio attended the convention as delegates, with Montogmery acting as a super delegate.
“I was the oldest woman at the convention,” Montogmery, who is 87 years old, said. “We sang, we yelled– everyone was happy.”
President Barack Obama formally accepted the Democratic nomination at the convention, but, according to Montgomery, the women stole the show.
“Michelle Obama set the whole thing off,” she said. “Of all the speakers, she was undoubtedly the best. Ann Richards’ daughter Cecile talked about the war against women. This was a unified convention.”
While Montgomery had attended a national convention before, and has attended state conventions since the ‘70s, this was her first as a delegate. She is a retired El Centro College history professor and former Heath municipal judge who made headlines a few years ago when she fought successfully to save a historic Rockwall cemetary. According to an article written about her by the Dallas Morning News in September of 2009, Montgomery has traveled extensively and has been awarded at least two Fulbright scholarships. She produced a history program on PBS and ran campaigns for mayor of Heath, Congress and the State Board of Education. Montgomery is also a published author.
“Having traveled all across the United States, I’ve never been to a state where people were more gracious,” she said of North Carolina. “They were just incredible. I can’t say enough about them.”
