Dr. Ervin W. Cook
NORTHPORT, Ala. – Ervin Wayne Cook, 72, went home to be with the Lord on July 27, 2010, at Northport Health & Rehab following a long battle with Parkinson’s.
He was born in Greenville on Dec. 29, 1937, to O.T. and Janie Cook. Dr. Cook was a 1956 graduate of Rockwall High School and resided in Texas for many years. Dr. Cook was a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Luther Rice Seminary. He was pastor of First Baptist Church in Venus from 1970 to 1973 while a seminary student and later was associate pastor of First Baptist in Pasadena from 1990 to 1992. He was pastor of Alberta Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Ala., from 1992 until his retirement in 2003 due to his health. He also was pastor of churches in Louisiana and Tennessee during his 36 years in the ministry.
Survivors include Ann, his wife of almost 51 years; one daughter, Kelly (Ronnie) Helton of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons: Stan (Kelli) Cook of Carrollton, Ga., and John Scott (Jodi) Cook of Palm Harbor, Fla.; five grandchildren, Chezlee and Hunter Helton of Tennessee, Cole and Case Cook of Georgia and Bryce of Florida; a brother, John Cook (Dorothy) of Sanger; sister Veta Jolley (Ed) of Rowlett and several nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m., July 30, at Alberta Baptist Church, 2210 University Blvd. E, followed by a memorial service with longtime friend Dr. Charles A. Redmond officiating and assisted by Dr. Jon Redmond, Rev. Scott Cagle and Rev. Larry Corder. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.
He will be remembered as a man who loved God, loved studying and preaching God’s Word, and loved others. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and a host of friends.
Pallbearers are Dr. Dan Turner, Jerry Johnston, Billy Barton, Danny Harrell, Doug Brown, and Bill York. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Daniel Potts, Dr. Steve Lovelady, Dr. Mark Woods, the staff at LaRocca and Northport Health & Rehab and members of Alberta Baptist Church.
