Now we get to blow stuff up too!!!

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Rockwall — Hello folks,

This one’s a bit of an update more than anything else.

You will remember that a few weeks ago I wrote to you all about the upcoming outdoor concert that was being planned by MusicFest (which I have joined, just so I’m being straightforward and all).

If you don’t remember, I’ll remind you that The Harbor will be the most serene setting for a full orchestra concert that will be given on Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. The Rockwall Philharmonic (which, by the way is a fully-professional group — not a come-one, come-all volunteer group as is sometimes thought) will be presenting the music of John Williams from The Harbor’s amphitheater.

This will not be an evening of long, drawn-out go-to-sleep tunes. Williams is best known for his work with movie scores like The Patriot, Superman and Star Wars. So bring the whole family to this one. Everybody will hear something they recognize.

Just the thought of such a concert itself is awesome enough ... but folks let me tell you, this past week it just got awesomer.

Apparently because there were so many cancellations recently with the bad weather on the Fourth of July, somebody ended up sitting around with a large quantity of unexploded ordnance.

And we fully intend to take care of that little problem for them.

So, the orchestra concert will also feature a little fireworks show at the finale. If there’s anything that will get me more excited than a full orchestral concert, it’s getting to blow stuff up at a full orchestral concert.

Well, to be honest ... Scott Self (owner and captain of the Sea Wolf) will be the one who gets to blow stuff up. Apparently if the explosive material gets beyond a certain caliber they make you get a license to set it off. Though this irritates me (hey, I can light a fuse with the best of ‘em), I guess I will be happy enough just to watch them.

Other than that, there’s other fun stuff in store for the evening. I think most of the restaurants in the area will be offering some sort of “Philharmonic special” that evening, and since it’s on a Saturday night there will be the normal weekend Harbor allure as well.

So, as you know by now (unless you’ve just never been to The Harbor on a busy night), you can probably expect a bit of a crowd down there for the event. That’s why I’d highly recommend getting there early.

(Get there early enough and you can help me set up the chairs!)

In the pre-concert time you can set out a picnic or take advantage of the box dinners being offered by some of the restaurants. The important thing is to claim your territory on the lawn.

All of us associated with MusicFest are really excited about this show, there’s never been anything like it before, though we hope to make it a regular thing here in Rockwall.

I hope you all make it out. Bring a friend while you’re at it.
