  • No matter where you are, buzzwords are all around us

I can’t always explain why I drift to a certain train of thought.
Maybe it’s because I spend hours of my time in meetings each week, listening, trying to comprehend what‘s being said, struggling sometimes with how I’m going to write this so you can understand it.

  • An update on some current issues in the county

Recently I had the privilege of presenting to the rest of the county the outstanding employees of 2012 who were selected to receive certificates of achievement by their elected officials or department heads.

  • On a mission to lose weight, the only way I know how

My contribution to this space today requires the use of a four-letter word. If you choose to read on and are offended, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

  • Is transcending music a thing of the past?

The city of Rockwall’s Parks and Recreation department recently announced the line-up for their new season of the ever-popular annual Concert by the Lake series, an event that I gleefully covered last year while working for this paper as an intern.

  • Are Faith and Professional Duty Reconcilable?

Recently, a case came to my attention about lawyers embroiled in a national controversy.  Defense attorneys were defending Catholic Health Initiatives, the owner of St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, Colorado in a medical malpractice case.

  • Helping raise awareness for child abuse a team effort

April is Child Abuse Awareness month, and at the YMCA, we champion child abuse prevention every day, but during April we will be working hard to bring awareness to this issue.

  • Return of spring brings with it annual turf wars

A few weeks back, I saw it for the first time. Last weekend, it had gotten bigger and now, it has spread like wildfire … consuming every square inch of my property. It’s green grass, folks; and it is my enemy.

  • Moving to Rockwall County was an excellent decision

This is rebound week for Jim.
Over the past few weeks, stories of Jim blunders have dominated this space. You like those stories. You’ve told me so. They make you laugh and they make you realize that you’re not alone with blunderous behavior.

  • VSO strives to serve veterans of Rockwall County

Rockwall County currently has about 5,850 veterans who live among us. These men and women have fought in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places that many of us don’t even know about. They have been infantrymen (Grunts), medics (Docs), helicopter pilots and door gunners, tankers, cooks, artillerymen, special forces and other unconvential special operations personnel, sailors, marines, Air Force fighter pilots, and a whole host of other specialized military jobs.

  • Saying one last goodbye to a family legend

For me, one of the biggest challenges of my job is picking a topic for my column. I always have that internal struggle a few days before it’s time to write; my mind wants to go in many different directions and it’s tough to settle on one single topic.
This week, the decision wasn’t difficult at all. In fact, I had set it in stone almost a week prior to our printing date. On any other day, this would be a great thing, but not this week.
