ALLEN — ALLEN - Rockwall's Dylan Devereaux and Robert Hinton and Heath's David Tanner and Clint Scott will carry the RISD banners to the UIL State Wrestling Meet next week after earning qualifying berths at the Region III championships at Allen High School last weekend.
Devereaux and Tanner will compete in their individual weight classes on February 26th and 27th at the Austin ISD Delco Center and Hinton and Scott will go as alternates.
The Top-4 finishers in each weight class from regional competitions advance to Austin, with fifth-place finishers also winning berths as alternates.
Rockwall-Heath racked up 62 team points to claim sixth-place honors and Rockwall posted 42 points for 14th place at Allen against 54 teams competing at the always-powerful Region III tournament.
Top-seeded Allen captured the regional championship with 231 points, including six weight-class titles, Clear Lake claimed second with 134 points, Westside third with 129 points and Lake Highlands fourth with 128 points.
Devereaux finished second in the 160-pound division, losing only to undefeated 55-0 Isaac Grieder of Lake Highlands in the final. The Rockwall captain (36-6) won three championship bracket bouts by pin, 10-6 decision and 5-4 decision en route to the championship match.
Heath football standout Tanner (38-7), who earned a fourth-place berth in the 215-pound weight class, opened with a win by pin before losing to undefeated (30-0) defending state champion Cody Davis of The Woodlands in a tough second-round match. He then advanced to the consolation final with a pin, 12-8 decision and 3-2 decision before losing to Lake Highlands' Ebrima Njie (50-3) by 9-5 decision for third place.
Scott picked up two championship-bracket wins by pin in the 189-pound division before falling and advanced to the consolation final before losing to Josh Morrison of Cy Woods for third place. He actually finished fourth, but lost a wrestle back and will go to state as an alternate.
Hinton won his first two 285-pound matches by 4-2 and 2-1 decisions and advanced to the consolation semifinal. He dropped a heartbreaker 2-1 in two overtimes and claimed fifth place with a 4-1 decision over Sean Grove of Richardson Pearce.
Heath's Nakona Brawner, Ryan Sauer and Troy Mercer garnered sixth-place finishes to help the Hawks to their sixth-place team finish.
Brawner advanced to the championship quarterfinals in the 119-pound class before taking his first loss. He then lost in the consolation semifinal and in the fifth-place match.
Sauer won his opener in the 145-pound division, lost his second-round match, advanced to the consolation semifinal and lost his battle for fifth place.
Mercer earned his sixth-place finish in the 171-pound weight class after advancing to the consolation semifinal and losing his fifth-place bout.
In the girls regional competition Katy captured the title with 138 points, Taylor finished second with 80, Klein Collins third with 76 and Cy Ridge fourth with 76 against 33 teams.

The regional quarterfinalist Rockwall girls soccer team placed eight players and sectional finalist Rockwall-Heath had four plus head coach Marco Duran on the District 21-4A All-District team announced by the district coaches.
