RISD wrestlers headed to state competition

ALLEN — ALLEN - Rockwall's Dylan Devereaux and Robert Hinton and Heath's David Tanner and Clint Scott will carry the RISD banners to the UIL State Wrestling Meet next week after earning qualifying berths at the Region III championships at Allen High School last weekend.

Devereaux and Tanner will compete in their individual weight classes on February 26th and 27th at the Austin ISD Delco Center and Hinton and Scott will go as alternates.

The Top-4 finishers in each weight class from regional competitions advance to Austin, with fifth-place finishers also winning berths as alternates.

He then advanced to the consolation final with a pin, 12-8 decision and 3-2 decision before losing to Lake Highlands' Ebrima Njie (50-3) by 9-5 decision for third place.

Scott picked up two championship-bracket wins by pin in the 189-pound division before falling and advanced to the consolation final before losing to Josh Morrison of Cy Woods for third place. He actually finished fourth, but lost a wrestle back and will go to state as an alternate.

Hinton won his first two 285-pound matches by 4-2 and 2-1 decisions and advanced to the consolation semifinal. He dropped a heartbreaker 2-1 in two overtimes and claimed fifth place with a 4-1 decision over Sean Grove of Richardson Pearce.

Heath's Nakona Brawner, Ryan Sauer and Troy Mercer garnered sixth-place finishes to help the Hawks to their sixth-place team finish.
