Area vaulters and Mustangs roll at USATF championships
CARROLLTON - Rockwall's Club Vaultitude qualified 11 pole vaulters and the Mustangs Track Club 25 track and field athletes to the USATF Region 12 Meet after recording top performances at the USATF Southwestern Association Junior Olympic Championships last week at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton.
The top-6 finishers in each event at the Southwestern Association Championships earned berths to the Region 12 Championships at Herman A. Barnett Track Complex in Houston July 7th-through-11th.
State silver medalist Shelby Kennard and bronze medalist Alicia Janke won their respective divisions to lead 27 Club Vaultitude vaulters at the Southwestern Association Championships.
Kennard captured the Young Women's classification with her leap of 12-0, Janke claimed the Intermediate Girls division with her 11-0 vault, Hannah Hughes and Hayden Raney finished third and fifth in the Youth Girls class, Ellie Moses and Lindsay Loy came in fifth and sixth in the Intermediate Girls division and Jessica Smith finished fifth in the Young Women's division.
Ryan Hughes finished second (15-0) and Devin Burnett (13-6) sixth in the Young Men's competition, Andrew Hinkely tied for fifth in the Intermediate Boys division and Jonny Lee finished third in the Youth Boys class to earn tickets to Houston, as Club Vaultitude qualified seven girls and four boys to the regional competition.
Rockwall Mustangs Track Club sisters Liah and Maiya Collins combined for five gold medals at the meet to lead 25 Mustangs qualifying for Region 12. Mustang thinclads brought home a record 20 medals.
Liah won the Sub-Bantam Girls 100 (15.21), 400 (1:15.84) and 800 (2:56.27) and Maiya finished first in the Midget Girls 800 (2:30.00) and 1500 (5:14.98).
Fiona and Thomas Dunleavy claimed Race Walk golds, with Fiona winning the Youth Girls 3000 and Thomas the Bantam Boys 1500.
Grayson Gilkey picked up the Mustangs eighth gold medal with his victory in the Midget Boys 3000 and also added a third-place finish in the 1500.
Other top performances were posted by Joel Gibbs with two silvers in the Intermediate Boys 3000 and 1500, Kelli Hardenbrook with a second in the Intermediate Girls 3000 and a fourth in the 1500, Yordlyn Engmann with a third in the Youth Girls 100 Hurdles and fifth in the 200 Hurdles and brothers Donik and Edmond Samalji with third and fourth place finishes in the Midget Boys Turbo Javelin.
Tyrus Fort came in second in the Bantam Boys High Jump; the Bantam Boys 4X400 Relay of Davis Baucum, Jacob Parsons, Brandan Fuehren and Drew Gladney finished third; Alexis Fisher finished second in the Youth Girls Discus; Austin Sharon won silver in the Intermediate Boys Shot Put; and Justin Willis finished fourth in the Youth Boys Long Jump and anchored the third place 4X100 Relay of Hunter Hopkins, Braylon Irving, Taivon Warmsley and Willis.
Already committed to compete in Houston are Hunter Hopkins in the pentathlon and javelin, Joel Gibbs in the 3000 and 1500, Grayson Gilkey in the 1500 and 3000 and Maiya Collins in the 800 and 1500. Others may choose to compete at the TAAF Region 7 Meet at Hanby Stadium July 9-11.
Heath's Aimee Arceneaux and Carlos Zaldivar both qualified for Region 12 running for Texas Titans Track Club. Arceneaux won the Young Women's 1500 (6:06.15) and Zaldivar came in fifth in the Young Men's 1500 (4:33.14)

Jackets Advance to championship rounds at state 7-on-7
Rockwall’s 7-on-7 football Jackets carried their outstanding season-ending league and tournament play to the 2010 Fox Sports Southwest 7-on-7 state championships at the Texas A&M University Penberthy Intramural Fields last Friday and Saturday.
