FRISCO —
The Rockwal-Heath volleyball team chalked up its first championship of the 2012 season after knocking off 6-of-7 opponents en route to the title of the Frisco ISD Invitational last weekend.
The Lady Hawks had to rally from a 2-1 opening loss to Canyon Randall, but bounced back to take six straight wins and the tournament championship. Heath also captured the Frisco championship last year.
They defeated Trophy Club Byron Nelson 2-0, bested Wylie East 2-1, downed Garland Naaman Forest 2-0 and knocked off Frisco 2-0 to move into a semifinal matchup against Frisco Centennial.
RHHS then defeated Centennial 2-0 (25-23, 26-24) to advance to the championship game versus Prestonwood Christian, a team the Hawks lost to 2-0 in the final of the Garland ISD Tournament on August 18.
The ladies came out strong against Prestonwood and never let up, racking up a 2-0 (25-18, 25-22) championship victory.
“The girls played really well,” said head coach Maggie Younger. “We started a little flat against Canyon Randall, but picked it up against some very good teams.”
“I’m not sure if we’re in top form yet, but we’re getting close. The girls really wanted this championship.”
Heath followed the Frisco Tournament action with a 3-0 non-district victory over Royse City on Tuesday at the RCISD gymnasium.
Regina Tillis and Haley Coleman combined for 38 kills, with Tillis pounding 21 and Coleman smashing 17, to spark the win.
Rockwall’s Lady Jackets also had a great tournament at Pearland, according to head coach Damon Wilson.
They defeated tournament host Pearland, ranked No. 5 in Lone Star Volleyball’s state rankings, and also knocked off Georgetown, ranked No. 3 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A poll, twice.
The ladies lost close matches to Plano West, Alamo Heights, Incarnate Word and Fort Bend Dulles.
The annual trek to Pearland provided a strong final prep for the Rockwall girls, who kick off District 12-5A play tonight against Longview at the RHS gymnasium.
Heath faces Tyler Lee tonight in its district opener at RHHS gymnasium.
