MESQUITE —
Rockwall-Heath’s 7-on-7 football team opened league play on Monday at Mesquite Horn with two wins and one loss in its league with Horn, Mesquite Poteet, Lake Highlands and Heath.
The Hawks kicked off the first of three 25-minute games with a 14-6 win over Mesquite Poteet.
Poteet scored first on its third possession after converting on a 7-yard TD pass for a 6-0 lead.
But, RHHS took a 7-6 lead when QB Chase Schultz hit WR Shyon Motlagh with a 40-yard TD aerial and added the 1-point PAT.
The Hawks added an insurance touchdown just before time expired with a Schultz 3-yarder plus a 1-point PAT to Patrick Baires.
In the second game, Lake Highlands took an early 6-0 lead on its first possession and held the sluggish RHHS offense two straight times before the Hawks scored on a 12-yard TD strike from Schultz to Motlagh to tie the score. The drive was set up following an interception by LB Raaquan Davis.
Lake Highlands then stopped Heath at the 3-yard line and put up a 7-yard TD with five seconds left to take the 12-6 victory.
All four teams entered their final games with 1-1 records.
Heath closed out the opening league night with a final-second 13-12 win over host Mesquite Horn.
The Hawks found the end zone first on a 45-yard touchdown bomb from Schultz-to-Motlagh, but the play was called back when Schultz was called for taking longer than four seconds to release the ball.
But, the twosome then converted on a 20-yarder for a 6-0 lead.
Horn tied the score at 6-6 with 10 minutes remaining on a 1-yard TD pass and then made it 12-6 on an 11-yard touchdown with less than a minute to play.
RHHS answered immediately, though, with a 45-yard score from Schultz-to-Motlagh, their fourth TD connection of the night, to tie the score at 12-12 with only seconds left in the game.
Schultz then released a one-point conversion pass that was batted around a couple of times before falling into the arms of Baires on the ground for the winning point.
Heath and Poteet took the first-week league lead with 2-1 records, with Horn and Lake Highlands trailing with 1-2 records.
The Hawks will travel to Lake Highlands next Monday for the second week of league play at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.
