ROCKWALL —
Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath football players are making the transition from spring training with full pads to summertime 7-on-7 with shorts and T-shirts.
The Jackets are set to kick off 7-on-7 play today when they compete at the Mesquite State Qualifying Tournament. Pool play will be at Forester Field in Dallas at 5 p.m.
Rockwall will also compete at the Plano West State Qualifying Tournament on June 8, the Tyler SQT on June 16 and will host its own State Qualifier on June 23.
The Jackets will host the Rockwall 7-on-7 League with Varsity and Junior Varsity teams from RHS, Naaman Forest and Rowlett participating. League games will be held on June 12, June 19 and June 26 at Rockwall with league champions crowned on the final night.
Heath’s finalized league and State Qualifying Tournament schedules were not available at press time.
The Hawks will attempt to make it back-to-back wins at the Wylie SQT on June 15. RHHS claimed the championship at last year’s event to earn its spot at the 2011 State Championships.
Teams finishing first or second in State Qualifying Tournaments around the state will earn berths at the 2012 State 7-on-7 Championships at Texas A&M’s Penberthy Intramural Fields in College Station.
The Division 1 State Tournament will be Friday, July 20th and Saturday, July 21.

The Rockwall softball team finally knocked off Plano East in its fourth attempt of the 2013 season and won the Class 5A area championship in the process.
Rockwall, which fell to East three times in regular season, made the best of its fourth matchup, downing the Lady Panthers 5-0 at McKinney North High School in a one-game playoff last Friday. -

RHS pays tribute to departing hoops coach McDill
Rockwall paid tribute and showed its appreciation to departing head girls’ basketball coach Jill McDill on Monday for her 12 years at the helm of the highly-successful Lady Jacket basketball program.
McDill is leaving to take the head coaching job and assistant athletic coordinator position at Sunnyvale High School, where she and her family live. -
GYMNASTICS: RHS boys, girls place at state
The Rockwall girls gymnastics team fell short by less than half a point in its quest for a third straight state gymnastics championship last weekend at the Rockwall High School gymnasium.
