AUSTIN — Rockwall-Heath's David Tanner closed out his wrestling career by claiming fifth-place honors last weekend at the UIL State Championships in Austin at the AISD Delco Center.
Rockwall's 160-pound state qualifier Dylan Devereaux was knocked from the competition by two close 1-point decisions. Devereaux dropped his opener 9-8 to Pablo King of Corpus Christi King and then fell to Andrew Murga of Borger 3-2 in the consolation bracket.
Tanner opened the championships by defeating Bushland's Crockett Gillmore by Pin at 1:00 to advance to the 215-pound championship second round. He lost to Coppell standout Teddy Johnson 14-10 in second-round action, then defeated Donovan Kletcher of Colleyville Heritage 4-1 and downed Will Foster of Georgetown by Pin at 2:05 before losing to Lake Highlands' Ebrima Njie by 9-6 decision in the consolation semifinals.
He pinned first-round foe Gillmore at the 2:40 mark to capture fifth place. Defending champion Cody Davis of The Woodlands repeated with a 6-3 final decision over Allen's Joby Bishop.
Allen won the team title with 136.5 points after finishing as runnerup the last two years. Flower Mound came in second with 100 points, defending state champion Canyon Randall scored 90 points for third and Coppell finished fourth with 86 points.
Heath earned a tie for 24th with 15 points scored by Tanner.
Caprock won the girls team title with 90 points, Katy finished second with 69 points and Hereford third with 68.
JV and non-qualifiers compete at Allen
The Rockwall JV and non-state qualifiers closed out the season at the Collin County JV Championships hosted by Allen High School last week.
The annual event featured 15 Metroplex-area teams and one from New Braunfels.
Jacket wrestlers brought home seven individual medals after placing four in the championship finals and three in the consolation finals.
Losing tough championship final matches were Zach Guzzardo (125), John Hernandez (145), Daniel Lambeth (160) and Collin Hill (215).
Jose Estrada (171) and Rilee Fisher (180) finished third after winning their consolation final bouts and Blake Cass (135) came home with a fourth-place finish.
Other top-6 finishers for the Jackets included Carter Smith (103), Caleb Jost (112), Nehamia Solis (140), Tyler Wells (145), Justin Villegas (171) and Michael Mcknight (180).
