Hawks crush Jackets

HEATH — Rockwall-Heath made it back-to-back wins over Rockwall with its dominating 45-12 victory in the annual I-30 Classic last Friday at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.

The Hawks (4-1) will attempt to continue their outstanding play in tonight’s battle against No. 4 area-ranked Mesquite in the District 12-5A feature game.

Undefeated Mesquite (5-0) enters the game after defeating Longview 33-7 in the 12-5A opener for both teams.

The Skeeters recovered five Longview fumbles in the first 20 minutes to take a 23-0 halftime lead and carried it to the 33-7 final.

QB Alex Cooper completed 16-of-25 passes for 213 yards and one TD and rushed for 60 yards and one TD on 12 carries. Receiver Rashard Higgins hauled in six passes for 136 yards and one touchdown in the win.

Kicker Marco Rodriguez also nailed four field goals of 28, 22, 36 and 26 yards.

Heath comes into the game following its blowout victory over Rockwall that kept the Ralph Hall Cup at RHHS. The Hawks won last year’s game 21-13 after Rockwall’s 52-51 win in 2010.

QB Chase Schultz took the field after almost two weeks off due to a concussion and sparked the win with 20-of-25 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns and 82 yards and two TDs on the ground.

The Hawks set the tone for the game in the first half, building a 17-6 lead on a 13-yard TD run by Schultz and a 51-yard TD pass from Schultz-to-Shyon Motlagh.

Motlagh also had a highlight-reel punt return for a TD negated due to a penalty.

Rockwall kept within striking distance with a 22-yard touchdown run by sophomore RB Chris Warren.

Warren then answered Heath’s first TD of the second half with a 12-yard TD pass reception from QB Dylan Campman after RHHS scored on its first possession on a 28-yard TD scamper by Schultz. The Hawks TD was set up by an interception by DB Parker Wood.

RHHS would then add three unanswered scores for the win. Rico Henderson smashed into the end zone with a 12-yard run, Schultz hit Motlagh with a five-yard TD strike and Schultz connected with Caleb Moss for an 11-yard TD to close out the scoring.

Motlagh and Henderson led Hawk receivers with Motlagh puling down four-for-132 yards and two TDs and Henderson grabbing six-for-67 yards.

Rushing leaders included Schultz with 82 yards and two TDs on 10 carries, Henderson with 40 yards and one TD on eight carries and Jeremy Armstrong with 17 yards on four carries.
