Heath wins silver bracket at Lewisville/The Colony tourney

Rockwall — Rockwall-Heath’s Lady Hawk volleyball team captured the Silver Bracket title at the Lewisville/The Colony Tournament last weekend and improved to 15-2 in the process.

RHHS went 6-of-7 at the tournament, losing only to Desoto. The ladies opened with a 2-0 (25-17, 25-12) pool victory over Garland and a 2-0 (25-8, 25-16) win over Woodrow Wilson on Thursday.

They followed with wins over Irving Nimitz and Woodrow Wilson on Friday and the loss to Desoto.

The Lady Hawks rebounded from their only tournament loss to knock off Frisco Wakeland 3-1 (25-15, 25-10, 20-25, 25-17) and defeat Catherine Bell and North Mesquite 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11) on Saturday for 5th place and the Silver Bracket championship.

RHHS continued its stellar play on Tuesday at the Lions Den in Greenville with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-17) victory against Greenville and a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-16) win versus Mabank to improve to 17-2 for the season.

Rockwall’s Lady Jackets put up one win and two losses for the week, with a dominating 3-0 win over Class 3A Community at RHS gymnasium on Friday and two losses to Class 5A powers Flower Mound Marcus and McKinney Boyd on Tuesday at Highland Park.

Rockwall battled back and forth against Boyd in the opening game and trailed by only one point at 15-14 before giving up 10 points against one for a 25-15 loss.

In Game 2 the Lady Jackets trailed 24-14 before Becca Floyd reeled off six straight service points to close the gap to 24-20. But, the Jackets hit outside the pole to give Boyd the 25-20 win.

Loren Kelly then opened a 6-0 RHS lead on six straight serves with blocks by Meredith Marlett, Ashlynn Broussard and Liz Lee sparking the run.

Rockwall still held an 11-7 lead until Boyd ran off 10 unanswered points to take a 17-12 advantage it would carry to the final 25-15 score.

Broussard led Rockwall with seven kills, Brooke Harrington put up four, Marlett three, Melanie Pugsley three and Lee two.

Against Flower Mound Marcus the ladies tied the score at 14-14 in Game 1 on an ace by Lee, but gave up seven straight points to give the momentum to Marcus. Marcus carried it to the wire for a 25-16 opening-game win.

Kelly got Rockwall off to a great start in Game 2 with a kill and two straight service aces for a 3-0 RHS lead. But, the Lady Jackets couldn’t keep it up and Marcus built a 24-14 lead. Brenna Mason served four straight points to close the gap to six, but a Marcus kill ended the game at 25-18.

In Game 3 Rockwall stayed within five points of the Lady Marauders for most of the game, but ended with a 25-17 loss.

Pugsley posted eight kills, Broussard hit five and Lee added four kills and two aces to lead the Lady Jackets. Kelly served two aces and had one kill and Allie Cecil served two aces and put up a load of assists and digs.

Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath will both compete in this weekend’s Team Cup in Carrolton at the IAD Events Center.
