Thomas, Ragland boost Jackets

Heath win clinches playoff berth for Rockwall

ROCKWALL —

Elijah Thomas put up a 2-pointer at the buzzer off an inbounds alley-oop pass to defeat McKinney North, Jared Ragland hit a 2-point put-back and 4-for-4 free throws to best J.J. Pearce and Heath edged Wylie East 63-56 to help Rockwall clinch at least the fourth place playoff berth from District 10-4A.

In Friday’s big double-overtime 71-69 win over McKinney North the Jackets turned in huge plays to secure the victory.

Austin Grandstaff kept the Jackets alive in the first OT period when he nailed a 3-point bucket at the buzzer to tie the score.

In the second OT period, with the score tied at 69-69, Thomas fielded an inbounds pass with one second left on the clock and laid the ball in for the victory.

Grandstaff and Thomas led RHS scorers with 16 points each and Wes Davis tossed in 14. Thomas also pulled down 14 rebounds, Davis grabbed 12 and Grandstaff booked 10 assists in the win.

Against Pearce on Tuesday at RHS gymnasium, both teams battled back-and-forth for much of the game. Davis broke open a 48-48 tie with a 2-point put-back with 2:56 left to give RHS a lead it would never relinquish.

Ragland then hit a 2-pointer and followed with 4-for-4 free throws to secure the victory. Davis added a final 2-point layup for the 58-49 win. The victory gives RHS a three game lead over Pearce with two games left.

Davis led RHS scorers with 19 points, Ragland hit 13 and Thomas added nine to spark the win.

Rockwall-Heath helped its crosstown neighbor clinch the playoff berth by defeating Wylie East 63-56 to give the Jackets a three game lead over East with two games remaining.

Heath took a lead it would carry to the end in the second period after trailing 11-12 following the opening quarter.

Cameron Martin led all scorers with 19 points, Jared Webber knocked down 12, Matt Greene gunned in 10 and Jordan Points pumped in 10

In Friday’s 54-47 loss to league-leader Highland Park the Hawks trailed by one (25-24) at halftime, but gave way to a 29-23 second half for the loss.

Martin fired up 18 points, Christian Nwabuko drained 16 and Webber added eight for the Hawks.
