Rockwall’s 7-on-7 football Jackets carried their outstanding season-ending league and tournament play to the 2010 Fox Sports Southwest 7-on-7 state championships at the Texas A&M University Penberthy Intramural Fields last Friday and Saturday.
The Jackets won 2-of-3 Pool O games and only missed a sweep by two points on Friday to advance to Saturday’s championship rounds, along with Whitehouse.
Rockwall’s only pool loss came in its first game against Houston Stratford in a game the Jackets could easily have won.
RHS pulled to within one at 27-26 when QB Alan Reed hit Blake Turner on a 35-yard TD strike on the first possession of the second half. But, the 2-point conversion attempt for the lead was knocked down. And, with two minutes left in the game DB Casey Wright returned an interception 25 yards for a score to close the gap to 40-38, but another 2-point PAT was stopped by Stratford to clinch the opening victory.
Reed threw for five touchdowns with Turner hauling in two for 35 and five yards, Andrew Hinckley grabbing two for one and 10 yards and Hunter Stevens pulling down one for five yards. Turner and Stevens also caught 1-point PATs and Wright scored on a 25-yard interception return.
Rockwall then got a little revenge against Whitehouse, a team that dominated the Jackets at the Tyler SQT, by knocking off the Wildcats 34-33.
Reed completed TD passes to Hinckley (8), Stevens (25), Turner (45) and Reed Loftis (5 and 15). He also threw a 2-point PAT to Loftis and two 1-pointers to Hinckley.
In the third pool game the Jackets bounced back from a 1-point deficit at 33-32 versus Stephenville to take a 40-33 lead on a Reed-to-Josh Broach 3-yard TD and a 2-point PAT from Reed to Turner.
Stephenville still had time to even the score, but a tipped ball by Loftis was intercepted by Zach Farrow to seal the win and send Rockwall into the championship rounds on Saturday.
Reed fired five more TD aerials, with Broach catching two for 40 and three yards, Hinckley two for two and seven yards and Turner one for six yards. Broach also scored on a momentum-changing 10-yard interception return, Turner pulled down a 2-point PAT and Hinckley caught two 1-point conversions.
Rockwall then lost a heartbreaker in the single-elimination championship rounds on Saturday, dropping a 35-28 overtime thriller to Pflugerville.
Lake Travis, with Texas Tech recruit Michael Brewer at the helm, went on to win the 2010 Division 1 state championship with a 42-39 victory over Desoto.
Lufkin defeated The Woodlands 50-39 for the D1 consolation title, Brownwood edged Cameron 34-32 for the Division II state championship and Graham defeated Burnet 36-29 for the D2 consolation title.
