Rockwall-Heath will hit the road to Longview tonight for a key District 12-5A battle after losing its first game of the season to unbeaten Mesquite on Friday.
Pre-season No. 6 state-ranked Longview, which is coming off a bye week, also lost to Mesquite 33-7 in its district opener.
The Lobos gave up five fumbles to allow Mesquite (5-0) to build a 23-point early lead. The Skeeters capitalized on great field position and started five consecutive possessions inside the 50-yard line.
The Longview defense did hold Mesquite to four field goals, but also gave up a one-yard TD run, a 49-yard TD completion and a 49-yard scoring run.
The Lobos, who lost standout QB Bivins Carraway (2,425 yards and 22 TDs in 2011) against Coppell, scored its TD in the fourth quarter on an eight-yard run by Antonius Sanders.
The Hawks (4-1,1-1) are coming off a 35-14 loss to Mesquite last Friday despite putting up 22 first downs to the Skeeters 17.
In a tough defensive battle in the first half, Heath held the high-scoring Skeeters to a 7-0 halftime lead on a four-yard run by QB Alex Cooper in the second period.
But, Mesquite came out of intermission and immediately scored on a 92-yard kickoff return by Jordan Bracy to up the score to 14-0.
Heath missed a huge opportunity to pull within seven after Bracy’s kickoff return, but droppeed a ball in the end zone on a fourth-and 20 from the Skeeter 29-yard line.
The Hawks did answer with a two-yard scoring run by Alex Solis before Cooper punched in his second four-yard rushing TD of the game for a 21-7 lead.
Mesquite then added another big play on a 64-yard touchdown scamper by Tyson Read for a 28-7 third-period lead before Shyon Motlagh caught a 27-yard TD pass from QB Chase Schultz to close the gap to 14 (28-14).
A final 70-yard TD run by Cooper in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring with Mesquite taking the 35-14 win and staying undefeated in 12-5A.
Cooper ended the game 20-of-26 passing for 250 yards and ran 11 times for 55 yards and two TDs.
Skeeters defensive end Javon Jones was named Sports Day’s Defensive Player of the Week after posting nine tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks and one forced fumble against the Hawks.
Heath QB Schultz went 23-of-43 passing for 265 yards and one TD to spark the Hawks aerial attack.
Motlagh hauled in six passes for 120 yards and one touchdown, R.J. Williams pulled down nine passes for 114 yards, Jake Fisher caught four-for-15 yards, Rico Henderson added three catches for nine yards and Austin O’Dell one catch for seven yards.
Henderson rushed for 63 yards on 13 carries, Fisher ran four times for 15 yards, Solis two times for three yards and a touchdown and Schultz was held to -10 yards on 13 carries.
