Heath clinches 12-5A v-ball title

MESQUITE — The Heath Lady Hawks volleyball team knocked off Mesquite Horn 3-0 on Tuesday to clinch the District 12-5A championship at the Horn High School gymnasium.

With only one game remaining in regular season, the 11-0 Hawks hold a two-game lead over second-place Rockwall, which has already earned a playoff berth, but is in a battle with Tyler Lee for the second seed from 12-5A.

Rockwall travels to Tyler tonight to face Lee and closes out its regular season against Heath on Tuesday at RHHS gymnasium. Lee closes its regular season on Tuesday against Mesquite Horn, which is still in the playoff mix for the fourth 12-5A seed.

Rockwall fell to Richardson Pearce 3-2 on Tuesday in a non-district prep for its final two district games.

The Lady Jackets opened with a 25-21 first-set win, dropped the second set 11-25 and the third set 19-25, but bounced back for a dominating 25-13 fourth set before falling 8-15 in the fifth set.

Heath had little trouble putting up its 11th district victory on Tuesday versus Mesquite Horn.

The ladies routed Horn 25-6 in the first set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on four straight service points by Claire Carpenter before Horn scored on a kill.

But, Haley Coleman followed with 11 straight service points, including three aces, and RHHS carried the early lead to the 19-point first set win.

Horn stayed closer in the second set, tying the score at 8-8 and closing to 16-23 before falling 25-18.

Heath then built an 8-2 lead in the third set, sparked by six straight serves, including two aces, by Brianne Lacy and increased the lead to 16-4 on eight straight service points by Molly Nelson.

The ladies closed out the set with a 25-14 victory for the 3-0 win.

Regina Tillis, who leads the Class 5A area in kills with 540 and digs with 497, led RHHS with 15 kills, one ace and three block.

Freshman Madison Hill smashed eight kills and had two blocks, Coleman ripped six kills, served three aces and had one block, Nelson put up three kills and one ace and Savanna Stutts had two kills and one block in the win.

Carpenter, who is one of the area leaders in assists with 687, also added three kills, one ace and numerous assists for the Lady Hawks.
