Tracksters head to Corpus Christi

ROCKWALL — As many as 20 Rockwall Mustang track and field athletes and five Club Vaultitude competitors are competing at the 2012 Texas Amateur Athletics Federation Summer Games this weekend in Corpus Christi.

The Mustangs qualified 20 in 24 events and Club Vaultitude had nine athletes earn berths to the Summer Games at the TAAF Region 7 Championships in Garland, July 12-July 14.

Several of the Club Vaultitude qualifiers, including Kaylee Hinton, Gaines Kinsey, Clark Norris, Garrett Dennard and Colten Laraway, are in Baltimore, Maryland this week for the USATF Junior Olympic Championships.

Region 7 gold medalists Kerry Anderson (18-and-Under High Jump), Chris Doyle (18-and-Under Pole Vault) and Noah Sewell (14-and-Under Pole Vault) will lead Club Vaultitude in Corpus Christi.

Double gold-medal winners Liah Collins and Cinque Balanciere will pace the Mustangs, along with single gold-medal winners Destini Jeter, Maiya Collins, Mykala Williams and Taylor Neely.

According to Mustangs head coach Barrett Hopper, many of the Mustangs will go directly from Corpus Christi to Humble to compete in the 2012 AAU Junior Olympics, which runs from Saturday through Aug. 4.

The TAAF Summer Games feature competition in 12 sports categories, including baseball, boxing, fencing, golf, judo, skateboarding, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon and track and field.

Championships are awarded in all sports, which are contested at various venues throughout the city of Corpus Christi.

Over 8,000 participants and spectators are expected to be part of the Summer Games with the largest being track and field.

The track and field competition will be at the Cabiness Multi-Purpose Complex and was set to kick off on Thursday at 1 p.m.. Preliminary events dominate today and Saturday with finals scheduled for Sunday.

Opening ceremonies are on tap for tonight at Bayfront Barge Dock, with the Parade of Athletes set for 8:30 p.m., followed by opening remarks by dignitaries at 9 p.m. and entertainment at 9:20 p.m. overlooking Corpus Christi Bay.
