Howell also praised decathlete Gaines Kinsey, who was also competing in only his second Decathlon . “He didn’t have a good first day, but set personal records in every event but the Pole Vault on Day 2.”
Kinsey, who won the Young Men’s Decathlon at the Region 12 Championships in Lubbock, finished 19th with 5,240 points at the National Championships against a very talented field.
He kicked off the 10-event Decathlon with a 22nd place in the 100 (12.15), a 19th place in the Long Jump (18-09 3/4), a 25th place in the Shot Put (23-11 3/4), a tie for 18th place in the High Jump (5-05) and a 14th place in the 400 meters (53.93) on Monday.
