ROCKWALL —
The Rockwall Mustangs Track Club, which skipped the USATF Region 12 Junior Olympic Championships in Lubbock last week, will take almost all of the team to this week’s TAAF Region 7 Championships at Garland’s Williams Stadium from Thursday through Saturday.
The Mustangs had qualified 24 athletes in 34 events for the regional Junior Olympic competition at Texas Tech University, but chose to focus heavily on the TAAF regional in Garland.
Team qualifiers from Region 7 are then expected to compete at the 2012 Summer Games of Texas in Corpus Christi on July 26-July 29, where more than 8,000 participants and spectators are anticipated in 13 sports.
The Top-3 finishers from each event at regional competitions normally advance to the state games, but due to its size and talent, Region 7 has been allotted two additional places for a total of five and could even pick up another place after all regional results are posted.
The Mustangs have sent well over 100 participants to state the last five years.
Several qualifying athletes will also compete at the 2012 AAU Junior Olympic Championships in Humble, Texas, from July 28-Aug. 4.
Club Vaultitude athletes will compete at the TAAF Region 7 Championships with almost all members vaulting and several competing in various races and other field events.
The Texas Titans are not competing at the TAAF regional, choosing instead to concentrate on the 2012 USATF Junior Olympics in Baltimore, Md., on July 23-July 29. Fourteen Titans qualified for the National Junior Olympic Championships.
