Rockwall's boys basketball team kicked off its 2009-2010 district season by knocking off Carrollton R.L. Turner 50-35 at RHS gymnasium on Friday.
The win placed the Jackets in a 4-way tie for first atop the 10-4A standings, along with Richardson Pearce, Greenville and Newman Smith.
Rockwall took a 16-10 first-period lead and closed out the fourth quarter with a 14-5 run to claim the district-opening victory.
Hunter Jorgensen tossed in 13 points, Wesley Davis put up 11 and Blake Sandlin, Luke Wardell and Griffin Frazier added six points each to spark the win.
The Jackets will hit the court again on Monday at the Wrangler-Pirate Classic at West Mesquite High School when they face North Garland at 11:30 a.m.
The District 10-4A opener between Rockwall-Heath and Newman Smith at RHHS gymnasium started with several miscues and single-digit scoring due to heavy pressure form both teams.
Newman took a 7-5 first-period lead, extended it to 16-10 at halftime and outscored the Hawks 30-24 in the second half to post a 46-34 win.
Jonathan Fuller led Hawk scorers with 10 points, including two 3-pointers, a throw-in dunk and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Demi Leonard put up nine points with four inside 2-pointers and one free throw, Anthony Haake knocked down two 3-point buckets for six points and Todd Franza posted five points with one 3-pointer and a 2-point layup for the Hawks.
Heath will now take a holiday break from district play and compete at The Colony Cougar Classic at The Colony High School on Monday-through-Wednesday.
