Lucas —
The No. 2 state-ranked Fulton Falcons played spoiler to Lucas Christian’s homecoming by knocking off the defending TCAF state champions 21-12 on their home field last Saturday in rainy weather conditions.
Fulton took an early 8-0 lead over Lucas on a TD completion from Todd Treadway to speedster Hayden Leverett and a 2-point PAT by Treadway.
Lucas Christian answered by driving for a touchdown, but Treadway blocked the PAT attempt for an 8-6 lead after one period of play.
Lucas then took a 12-8 lead in the second quarter. The Falcons responded by marching the length of the field before giving up an interception at the goal line with 3:30 left in the half.
Fulton fumbled away another opportunity with 1:58 on the clock, but got the ball back at the 1:22 mark on a forced fumble by Brenner Newman and recovery by Conner Cleveland.
The Falcons then found the end zone again on a 10-yard pass completion from Treadway-to-Leverett for a 14-12 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Newman stole the ball from the Lucas returner, but the Falcons were unable to capitalize before halftime.
Newman had six tackles, Cleveland totaled five and Treadway logged eight in the first half to hold Lucas to 12 points. The defense shut out the defending state champions in the second half.
In the second half, Newman recovered his second fumble of the game off a big hit by Cleveland.
Treadway then put up the final points of the game on a 29-yard scamper with 8:10 left in the third period. Fulton added a 1-point conversion for the 21-12 final score.
Head coach Josh Johnson was pleased with the play of the Falcons. “The kids played really well in spite of the muddy conditions. I really like this team’s ‘refuse to lose’ attitude. If we can stay healthy, we’ll be hard to beat.”
Fulton will next meet Bloomburg (0-3), ranked No. 70 in UIL Division 1 by sixmanfootball.com, tonight at Cain Middle School.
No. 6-ranked Heritage Christian Academy will hit the field again tonight after a bye week to face Campbell (1-4), a 48-0 loser to Greenville Christian School last Friday.
Campbell’s only win came in Zero Week with a 33-22 win over Balch Springs Christian. Its three losses were by scores of 33-27 (McKinney Cornerstone), 55-8 (Greenville Phoenix) and 45-0 (Wylie Prep).
