ROCKWALL —
Sarah Haskins and Cameron Dye battled cold, windy weather conditions, along with strong competition, to capture Toyota U. S. Open championships at The Harbor in Rockwall on Sunday in the final event of the Lifetime Fitness Pro-Series Race to the Toyota Cup.
Haskins, a 2008 Olympian, won the Womens Open title with a time of 2:01.17. She became the first triathlete in the Open’s six-year history to claim six Pro-Series championships. She went six-for-six in a spectacular 2012 season, winning in Miami, Austin, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Chicago and Rockwall.
Alicia Kaye, who won last week’s Los Angeles Pro-Series event, came in second in the Open with her 2:01.34 clocking and Lauren Goss finished third with her 2:03.59.
In the Mens Pro-Series Open, Cameron Dye finished first with a 1:50.04 time, Ben Collins was second with his time of 1:50.48 and four-time Olympian Hunter Kemper finished third with a 1:52.28.
The top three finishers in both divisions earned cash awards of $15,000, $7,500 and $3,000.
Haskins and Dye also closed out the Race to the Toyota Cup atop the standings and picked up checks for $30,000 plus new Toyotas.
“This is the most amazing year of my life,” said Dye. “My son was born and I had my best year in racing. This is the perfect way to end a great year.”
Second-place finishers were Alicia Kaye and Hunter Kemper, who earned $20,000 checks for their Pro-Series point totals.
Third-place checks of $10,000 went to Annabel Luxford and Ben Collins.
Over 1,500 athletes, with the majority being amateurs, gathered at The Harbor in unseasonable weather conditions with temperatures in the 40s and 50s. Most of the triathletes, including Rockwall’s Russ Childers, felt the 70.3 degree water in Lake Ray Hubbard was the warmest part of the competition.
Along with the featured Pro-Series final Race to the Toyota Cup, competitions were held in multiple Olympic distance and Sprint distance age-group races, Mens Clydesdale races, Womens Athena races, relays, college opens and Para-Athletic Sprint and Olympic races.
Olympic Elite winners were Jacob Rhymer with his 1:55.16 in the male division and Lauren Barnett, of Fort Worth, with her 2:10.27 in the female class.
Wade Braun won the Sprint Open with his 1:13.26 and Cari Ossenfort claimed the Sprint Open title in the female class with her 1:20.57.
The College Olympic Open titles were captured by David Preston (2:03.39) and Lauren Germain (2:32.01) and the College Sprint Open titles by Connor Ratcliff (1:13.11) and Courtney Reich (1:25.11).
Jennifer Clark (2:02.47) and Joel Alsup (1:49.30) won the Sprint Para-Athletic competition and Damon Clifford (4:23.00) claimed the Olympic-distance race.
Sprint Relay winners were Urban Zipsters (1:14.40) in the male competition and Baylor Triathletes in the coed competition (1:24.48).
Topping the Olympic Relay events were Tri-Amigos (2:38.37) in the male division, Flower Mound Cycle Club (2:35.25) in the female division, BMP (2:25.48) in the coed division and Beat The Rest (1:59.46) in the special division.
The 2013 Race To The Toyota Cup will feature triathlons in the same venues, with the season opening in Miami with the Nautica South Beach Triathlon and closing at the Toyota U. S. Open in Rockwall.
