Lobos early lead insurmountable for Hawks

HEATH — Before the Heath Hawks were even able to settle in at Longview’s Lobo Stadium last Friday, they were trailing the Lobos 21-0 after the first quarter and 49-6 heading into halftime.

It was almost as if Longview shook off a lot of early-season adversity and put it all together against the Hawks in the opening two quarters.

The Lobos took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in six plays with RB Tory White sprinting 44 yards for the early 7-0 lead.

He scored again on a 13-yard run and racked up 101 yards on nine carries in the first period. The Lobos also found the end zone on a two-yard pass from QB Dezmond Chumley to Antonius Sanders for a 21-0 lead.

L’Darrius Peterson scored on the first play of the second quarter on a 27-yard run, Sanders caught a 22-yard TD pass, Nakia Brown scored on a 70-yard punt return and Peterson punched in a two-yard TD run, all before the Hawks were able to hit the scoreboard.

RHHS scored on a seven-yard TD pass from QB Chase Schultz to Austin O’Dell late in the second period to head into the halftime break trailing 49-6.

After the much-needed break, the Hawks came out and outscored Longview 21-3 in the second half, but the 43-point lead was just too much to overcome.

O’Dell pulled down his second TD reception of the game on a 38-yard strike from Jordan Hoy.

Longview kicker Jalen Webster then nailed a 35-yard field goal for the Lobos only second-half points.

Heath scored again in the fourth period on a punt return by DeShon Elliott and closed out the scoring with a 25-yard fumble return by Kyle Loeffler.

Schultz finished the game with 144 yards and one TD on 15-of-25 passing and rushed for 33 yards on nine carries. He ranks among the area leaders in passing with 1,151 yards and 11 TDs on 106-of-166 passes.

Hoy added 48 yards and one TD on two-of-six passing.

Shyon Motlagh, who is one of the area receiving leaders with 622 yards and 10 TDs on 36 catches, led all receivers with five catches for 77 yards, Jake Fisher pulled down six-for-50 yards and O’Dell hauled in three-for-49 yards and two touchdowns.

Heath has a bye this week before taking the gridiron next versus Mesquite Horn. The Hawks will then square off against North Mesquite and close out regular season against Tyler Lee.
