The Rockwall girls swim team captured second-place team honors and Heath claimed third place at the Region 4-4A Swimming and Diving Championship at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium last weekend.
The Rockwall and Heath boys teams finished fifth and sixth respectively at the competition. Highland Park ran away with both team titles, racking up 635 points for the girls championship and 325 for the boys title.
Heath’s Claire Walters won gold in the 100-Yard Fly with her time of 57.01 and will lead RISD swimmers to the UIL 2012 State Championships at the Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin on Feb. 24 and 25.
Other state qualifying performances by RISD athletes included Walters in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:53.33), Jared Butler from Heath in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:44.18), Rockwall’s Schyler Hohenberger in 1-Meter Diving and Raena Eldridge from Rockwall in the 50-Yard Freestyle (24.11) and 100-Yard Fly (57.67).
Only the first-place finisher in each event from the eight regions around the state automatically advances to Austin, with the remaining berths filled from call-up lists compiled by the UIL from the next fastest times.
Region 4 silver medalists for the RHS girls included Raena Eldridge in the 50-Yard Freestyle (24.11) and 100-Yard Fly (57.67), Morgan Barnes in the 100-Yard Freestyle (54.88), the 200-Yard Medley Relay of Voth, Conner, Eldridge and Barnes (1:56.88) and the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay of Eldridge, Conner, Barnes and Voth (3:49.87).
Second-place finishers for the boys were Schyler Hohenberger in 1-Meter Diving (352.60) and Alex Fontenot in the 100-Yard Backstroke (54.88) for Rockwall and Jared Butler in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:44.18) for Heath.
Third-place winners included Rockwall’s Sarah Beasley in 1-Meter Diving (299.30), Heath’s Walters in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:53.33) and Jared Butler in the 100-Yard Breaststroke (1:02.24) and the RHHS girls 400-Yard Freestyle Relay of Walters, Chandler, Jaimes and Williams (3:59.21) and the boys 200-Yard Freestyle Relay of Butler, Perlitz, Gutierrez and Nelson (1:31.80).
Logging fourth-place finishes for RISD were Rockwall’s Rebecca Voth in the 200-Yard IM and 100-Yard Backstroke, Alex Fontenot in the 100-Yard Fly, Collin Vu in the 500-Yard Freestyle and the boys 400-Yard Freestyle Relay of Phillips, Fontenot, Tokuz and Vu, which set a new team record with its time of 3:25.09. Heath’s Cole Perlitz also finished fourth in the 100-Yard Freestyle.

Soccer girls dominate all-district
The regional quarterfinalist Rockwall girls soccer team placed eight players and sectional finalist Rockwall-Heath had four plus head coach Marco Duran on the District 21-4A All-District team announced by the district coaches.
