ROCKWALL —
The Rockwall Mustangs are expected to have several track and field athletes competing at the 2012 AAU Junior Olympic Championships at Humble High School’s Turner Stadium from July 28-Aug. 4, with many traveling straight from the TAAF Summer Games in Corpus Christi.
The Houston area is hosting the Junior Olympic Championships for the first time. Approximately 15,000 participants representing all 50 states are expected to take part in 18 various sports with AAU national champions crowned in each one.
Track and field is the feature competition at the Games and kicks off Saturday with Decathlon, Heptathlon, Pentathlon, Triathlon and Race Walk events.
Running and field event competitions will run from Monday through Saturday, with many timed finals, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals in 18 classifications from Primary (8-and-Under) through Young Men and Women (17-18).
The Mustangs will be led at the AAU Junior Olympics by qualifying gold medalists Kajol Maheshwari (1,500 and 3,000 meters), Destini Jeter (800 meters), Canyon Hall (High Jump), Tanner McCalister (Shot Put), Liah Collins (800 meters), Thomas Dunleavy (3,000 Race Walk), Fiona Dunleavy (3,000 Race Walk), Taylor Neely (2,000 Steeplechase) and Desman Williams (Shot Put).
Silver medalists from the SW regional qualifier expected to pace the Mustangs at Humble include Cinque Balanciere (400 meters), Maiya Collins (1,000 meters), Mykala Williams (1,500 meters), Devon Maheshwari (3,000 meters), Grayson Gilkey (3,000 meters), Canyon Hall (Shot Put) and Liah Collins (400 meters)
