ROCKWALL —
The Rockwall County Commissioners Court is still dealing with the Rockwall County Courthouse’s pigeon problem, receiving a bid from one company for approximately $10,000 during their special meeting on Aug 9.
The commissioners will hear from other companies bidding on the project and receive some information on future precautions to keep the problematic birds away in next week’s meeting.
Initially, pigeon abatement services were in the planning for the courthouse, but they were cut from the plans.
“[The pigeons are an issue] not only because of the possible damage to the new building, but they are also a sanitation issue and are currently nesting at the front entrance of the building,” Commissioner Dennis Bailey said. “It is necessary to get them out of there and clean that area up.”
The court also affirmed the burn ban for 30 days due to North Texas’ drought conditions in their only action in the meeting.
The last discussion, brought to the meeting by county staff, was a discussion on how to move forward with a potential perceived conflict of interest due to the recent election of Rockwall County Constable Trey Chaney.
The county currently contracts with Chaney Paper, owned by Trey Chaney’s father, for cleaning supplies and products. County Auditor Lisa Constant will put out the contract for bid as required by law regarding contracts exceeding $50,000 per year.
The Rockwall County Herald Banner contacted Chaney Paper but was unable to confirm Trey Chaney’s relation to the company at press time.
