ROCKWALL —
Plano’s 7-on-7 football team, which earned its berth to the Fox Sports Southwest 7-on-7 State Championships in College Station at the Rockwall State Qualifying Tournament, went undefeated to the Division 1 championship at Texas A&M’s Penberthy Intramural Fields and Kyle Field last Friday and Saturday.
The 8-0 Wildcats captured their first state 7-on-7 title with a 45-28 victory over Manvil in the championship game.
They also knocked off Arlington Bowie 32-28 in the semifinals, Rosenberg Terry 34-20 in the quarterfinals, Katy Cinco Ranch 39-19 in the second championship round and Katy 33-26 in the first championship round after going 3-0 in pool play on Friday.
Sherman, which advanced to state with its semifinal finish at the Rockwall SQT, went 3-0 in pool play, but lost in the first round of championship play to state finalist Manvil 41-13.
Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath District 12-5A opponents Longview, Tyler Lee and Mesquite all advanced to the championship rounds at the state tournament.
In Division II action, Celina won its fourth state title with a 34-28 championship victory over Graham. The Bobcats also claimed championships in 2007 and 2009 and won the 2000 title before the tournament opened two divisions.
The only other school to win more than one title is Baytown Lee in 2001 and 2005.
With Celina’s win in Division II, the Dallas area swept the state 7-on-7 championships for the second consecutive year. Desoto and Melissa captured last year’s D1 and D2 titles.
