ROCKWALL —
Rockwall’s Yellowjackets racked up a 49-29 win over North Mesquite for their first District 12-5A victory before a packed Homecoming crowd last Friday at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.
In ceremonies prior to the big game, Phil Gil and Taylor Lemons were crowned 2012 Homecoming King and Queen by last year’s recipients Andrew Hinckley and Taylor Gilstrap.
Rockwall will attempt to make it two-in-a-row tonight when the Jackets take the Earl Campbell Field against Tyler Lee (0-2) at Tyler’s Rose Stadium.
Lee is coming off a bye week and will be looking to pick up its first district win after a 49-24 loss to Mesquite Horn and a 27-7 defeat by North Mesquite.
The Red Raiders are led by speedsters QB Jordan Richardson (6-0,175,4.5) and RB LaQuintas Wallace (5-10,205,4.5), neither of whom have really broken loose in district play.
They also rely on bruising inside runner Marcus White (5-6,185,4.8) behind an experienced offensive line.
Rockwall put together its best game of the season for Homecoming, chalking up 563 yards of total offense.
Sophomore RB Chris Warren posted his second 240-plus yard rushing game of the season, running for 268 yards and four TDs on 36 carries. He also put up 248 yards versus Rowlett and has 759 yards and 11 touchdowns on 114 carries for the season.
The Jackets took an early lead on a 51-yard scamper by QB Dylan Campman and never trailed. The TD was set up when Chris Hinckley recovered a Stallion fumble at the RHS 20-yard line with 9:42 left in the first period.
North answered with a 22-yard field goal before Warren scored his first TD on a 28-yard TD run.
The Stallions then kicked another field goal of 31 yards with 3:02 on the first-quarter clock. But, Warren added his second rushing TD on a one-yard burst with 8:29 left in the half for a 21-6 RHS lead.
North then scored on a nine-yard TD pass at the 5:45 mark and closed the gap to one point at 21-20 when Stallion DB Thomas Oberg ran in a 47-yard interception return.
Triple threat back Xavier Castille responded with a one-yard touchdown run out of the Wildcat formation to send the Jackets into halftime with a 28-20 lead.
RHS followed intermission by outscoring North 21-7 in the second half to book its first 12-5A win.
Castille scored on a 39-yard run, Warren tallied a two-yard run and a 43-yard run to offset North’s 20-yard TD pass for the 20-point Rockwall victory.
Campman finished the game with 97 yards on six-of-nine passing and 78 yards and one TD on six carries rushing. He has 732 yards on 67-of-117 passing for the season.
Castille put up 56 yards and two TDs on six carries, 55 yards on three receptions and was one-for-one passing for 40 yards.
Zach Berryman finished with 30 yards on seven carries rushing and caught four passes for 82 yards.
Chris Hinckley led the way on defense with 10 tackles, one tackle for loss, two QB pressures and one fumble recovery, Jared Farrow had 12 tackles (five solo) and Josh Rippy posted seven tackles (five solos).
Hinckley and Farrow received Player of the Game honors.
