HEATH —
The Rockwall-Heath volleyball team became the first undefeated 12-0 district champion in school history with its 3-0 win over crosstown rival Rockwall in the final regular season game at RHHS gymnasium on Tuesday.
Both Heath and Rockwall will advance to the Class 5A Bi-District playoff round, with the No. 1 seed Lady Hawks taking on District 11-5A fourth seed Lakeview Centennial, a 3-2 winner over Garland for the final 11-5A berth, next Tuesday at a site and time to be determined later.
Rockwall, which entered the Heath game in sole possession of second place in 12-5A, fell back into a tie with Tyler Lee with the loss and Lee’s 3-1 win over Mesquite Horn on Tuesday.
The Lady Jackets broke a tie with Lee on Friday when they defeated the Lady Raiders in Tyler 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23).
RHS and Lee have both earned playoff berths, but will have a playin game on Friday at a site and time still to be determined at press time to decide second and third seeds.
Rockwall has locked down the Mesquite Poteet gymnasium next Tuesday for its Bi-District playoff opener.
In the final regular season game at RHHS, the Lady Hawks jumped out to a 9-2 lead over the Lady Jackets, sparked by three kills by Regina Tillis, a kill and block by Molly Nelson and an ace by Claire Carpenter to offset kills by RHS’s Kelsey Gaertner and Jacqueline Ullmann.
Rockwall was unable to close the gap as RHHS chalked up the 25-13 win. Tillis led the way with seven kills and Haley Coleman logged four kills, one block and one ace.
In the second set, Rockwall was able to keep it closer at 25-17. Madison Hill paced Heath with five kills, two aces and two blocks. Ashlyn Broussard and Lindsey Wheeler led RHS with four kills each and Gaertner added three kills.
Heath also closed out the third set with a 25-17 score. Hill pounded six kills, Tillis smashed five kills and Coleman ripped three kills and one ace.
The Lady Jackets were led by Broussard, Wheeler and Bailey Smith with three kills each.
